Not Even Looking At the Glass

I don’t like to think of myself as an optimist or a pessimist, really. Heck this week, I’ve just been busy. I realize this is only the second day of the week, but that’s the way it’s been. In light of all that busyosity I haven’t had time to give a ton of thought to Indiana’s trip to MSG to face Pittsburgh tonight. The few ounces of thought I have given it say this: the Hoosiers lose tonight. The Big Ten Geeks think it will be close because Pitt hasn’t beaten anyone and needed double OT to beat Duquesne. I hope they’re right. Hell, I hope if they’re wrong, it’s because the Hoosiers pulled out the W. Unfortunately, the numbers for Pitt and IU say to me that the Panthers are good at defense in general. More specifically, they hang their hats on cleaning up the defensive glass and keeping their opponents off the free throw line. On offense, they get to the free throw line and make a lot of 2-pointers.

In contrast, IU is not especially good at offense. Their biggest strengths are on the offensive glass and getting to the free throw line. Those match up with Pitt’s defensive strengths. On D, the Hoosiers are pretty middle of the road in defending 2-pointers. From watching games, my feeling is that these Hoosiers have a very hard time defending the paint, and that is where the Panthers make their hay. It could be a tough night for these young, skinny Hoosiers.

But let’s stick with not looking at that glass. Let’s wait and see what happens when the game is played in our TV sets.

Boston U vs. Indiana HD Box 11-20-09

This is another one that had at least one discrepancy. Mainly, Carlos Strong of BU was awarded a steal about two minutes after the play by play has him checking out of the game. So that’s not reflected in the HD Box. So he gets one less steal here than in the official box score.

I Was Wrong

So I predicted yesterday that the game between the Hoosiers and Rebels would be all about turnovers. It wasn’t. Predictably, the Hoosiers turned it over a lot. But that didn’t matter because they turned it over only one more time than Ole Miss did. The problem with turnovers is that they prevent you from taking shots. As it turned out, both teams took the exact same number of shots in the game. Mississippi just connected on more of them, probably because they were repeatedly able to knife down the lane for a layup or a dump-off for a dunk or layup by someone else (typically Murphy Holloway, who hit 12 of his 18 2 point shots) or an occasional wide-open 3. The Hoosiers had some, but less, of that, and their heretofore white hot shooting beyond the arc deserted them. Ken Pomeroy has pointed out that eFG% is far and away the most important of the four factors, and that (not TO% as I predicted) was certainly the case in this game.

Some other random thoughts:

  • IU’s spunk and fight was good. They made two solid pushes in the second half and never stopped fighting. That’s nice to see.
  • Jordan Hulls looked completely overmatched against the aggressive and quick Mississippi perimeter defenders. That was probably just some shock at the drastically improved quality of the competition.
  • Neither team seemed particularly interested in defensive rebounds. IU grabbed 45% of their own missed shots, outdone only by the Rebels getting to 47% of theirs.
  • Jeremiah Rivers is better for the team, but he needs to settle down a little. Twice in the half court, he probed the middle of the D with the dribble, then stopped, pivoted and fired a pass to the wing … where it bounced straight out of bounds. Later in the game, I heard Tom Crean holler to Jordan Hulls, “Jordan, see the open man!” after a turnover thrown to someone on the IU bench. That might be good advice for everyone handling the ball.
  • Speaking of handling, Verdell’s behind-the-back dribbling in traffic needs to stop. That move twice turned the ball over in the first half, once when it bounced off his back heel.
  • Regarding the importance of eFG%, 2 point jumpers are the most inefficient shots a player can take on the floor. This isn’t some conjecture of mine. It’s a fact. The Hoosiers took 24 of those shots out of 68 total shots from the floor, their highest percentage of this young season. Obviously, the defense plays a role in what shots the offense can take, but it would be nice to take fewer of those.

Indiana vs. Mississippi HD Box 11-19-09

There are sure to be some discrepancies between this data and the conventional box score, as there were a handful of issues with the play by play. At one point, Christian Watford was credited with an assist on a Jeremiah Rivers made jumper, even though Watford was, technically speaking, on the bench at the time. So I changed that to Verdell Jones. Realistically, it was an unassisted shot off the dribble, but perhaps the scorekeeper was shocked into confusion by seeing Rivers actually hit a jumper. There were a few other oddities, too.

The HD Box Score is something created by Ken Pomeroy, which I've tried to duplicate for my own purposes. kenpom explains the data here. The only thing different here is the Points Per Weighted Shot (PPWS) column, which John Gasaway (the erstwhile Big Ten Wonk) told me about here.

The Rebels Are Comin’

Or at least the Hoosiers are going to meet them in Puerto Rico. After two exhibitions and then two more warm-up games, the Hoosiers face a measuring stick game against Mississippi this evening. The folks at Inside the Hall did a nice job telling us some things about the Rebels here. It’s early in the season to put too much stock in the numbers, but so far Ole Miss has been pretty good on both offense and defense. Kenpom’s adjusted efficiencies indicate that IU’s offense has been stellar so far, while the defense has been nearly as bad as the O has been good. But, like I said earlier, it’s early to put too much stock in those numbers, given the small number of games each team has played.

However, one aspect of the game stands out to me in Mississippi’s raw numbers: turnovers. The Rebels have been exceedingly adept at both hanging onto the ball and causing turnovers for their opponents. Specifically, they have stolen the ball on 20% of their opponents’ possessions. That’s absurd! 1 out of every 5 possessions they have played D, the Rebels have liberated the ball from the other team. Now, their opponents have been none too good at holding onto the ball in general (actually, one of them – Alabama St. – hasn’t played another game, so we really don’t have much to draw on), but the interesting thing is that holding onto the ball is the one thing that the Hoosiers have done poorly on offense. OK, they’ve been pretty awful at making their free throws, too, but I’m talking about the Four Factors here. And the one bugaboo on their short offensive résumé this season is that they’ve turned the ball over way too much. That would seem to play right into the hands of Mississippi.

So after all that, it says here that the Hoosiers will have to hold onto the ball to compete with a more experienced and impressively talented Rebel squad. They’ll need to play much better D, too. That said, I’m looking forward to seeing them in the crucible of competition against a team that looks to be outfitted for a trip to the Big Dance in March.

In Defense of Devan

I'm not completely sure what to think of the Hoosiers' win over the Spartans of USC Upstate (HD Box), which both the Girl and I though was an ironically named school in California. But I do know that it’s a win, and wins are, like, better than losses. Also, this team is young and still not that good. Tom Crean keeps telling us that, and we would probably do well to believe him rather than to let a seemingly solid performance against an even more inferior Howard team distract us from that knowledge. That’s probably even more reason for Hoosier fans to be happy with any sort of win that they can get their hands on. In this case, it seemed like IU just couldn’t figure out how to salt the game away, despite building a 20 point lead with less than 8 minutes left.

All things considered, the IU defense was pretty good. They kept the Spartans from shooting especially well, got a bunch of steals, cleaned the defensive glass, and created a good number of turnovers. Either the IU offense wasn’t so great or the Upstate D was nearly as good as IU’s. A 7’3” German patrolling the paint probably had something to do with them hitting only 45% of their 2’s, but the Hoosiers stroked it from beyond the arc to the tune of … 46%. That seems to be the difference in the game. Then again, the Hoosiers really kept the visitors in the game by hitting only 16 of their 30 free throws. That’s just not good.

Here are the ratings calculations for the Hoosiers from this game. I’ve added a couple more columns that relate to how the team’s efficiency when the player was on and off the floor. It looks at how the team did on both offense and defense with the player on the court vs. off it. So OEff+/- is the difference in the team’s points per 100 possessions when the player is on the court and off it. DEff+/- is the same thing, but for the opponent’s point per 100 possessions  And EffMargin+/- just subtracts the previous 2 columns. Remember that, since smaller numbers are better when talking about defensive efficiency, a negative number in that column is a good thing. (Likewise, negatives in the OEff+/- and EffMargin+/- columns are bad.)

A few thoughts on the individuals who played for the Hoosiers:

  • I still like me some Christian Watford. I’ve read numerous postgame articles praising him for all his glorious skills. However, after the game, he thought he hadn’t really scratched the surface, and a closer look might bear that out. His stat line on offense is both impressive and efficient, especially given his significant usage. And he once again did solid work on the boards, especially on the defensive end. However, despite grabbing those boards and tallying IU’s only blocked shot of the night, these numbers indicates that the team played better D when he was off the floor than on it. So that might be an indicator of one way he can improve.

  • I coudln’t figure out why Devan Dumes was on the floor so much. Like is often the case, I tended to notice what he was  doing on the offensive end more than anything: clanging all his 3’s, missing his only freebie, and turning the ball over 5 times. So why was he out there? It seems like the folks at Inside the Hall were wondering the same thing. Well, the HD Box shows that he had the second best +/- on the team, so he was clearly not killing IU that much. There must be something more. And the numbers above back that up. No other player who played more than 5 minutes had a better defensive efficiency +/- number. So Devan’s 1 steal and 5 defensive rebounds were only part of what he was bringing to the table on defense.

  • I was kind of down on the game of Jeremiah Rivers, thinking that he got out of control and turned the ball over too much, while not being able to hit anything from the floor or FT line. Sure he had 5 assists, but he had 4 turnovers, too. Once again, the numbers indicate that he’s good for the team, as IU was more efficient on both ends of the floor when he was out there than when he was sitting. That was a tad surprising to me, but what was more surprising is that he had a bigger positive effect on the O than the D. Goodonya Jeremiah.

  • Maurice Creek put up double digit points again and obviously played efficiently with his team high offensive rating. However, the team was outscored by 2 points while he was on the floor and was less efficient on both ends.

  • I still love me some Derek Elston, and he was once again great for the team. Remember way back when I mentioned that Dumes had the second best +/- for the night? Well someone had to beat him, and that someone was Derek Elston. He had the best +/- number, and you can see above that IU was better on both ends of the court with him on it. Not only did he hit his shots (75% eFG%), and dish out two assists, he also grabbed about 25% of the available rebounds on both ends of the floor. That’s quality contribution, right there.

  • I would like to see us get Matt Roth a few shots when he’s on the floor, but that might be more sentimental than anything. There’s no need to force anything to him when the team hits 45% from the outside.

Hoosiers Thunder Like Bison, Beat Them

Tom Crean keeps talking about wanting to push the pace and play up-tempo (an idea that John Gasaway thinks will be nothing but good for the typically ploddingly-paced Big 10), and the Hoosiers did just that against Howard (HD Box), to the tune of 74 possessions. It remains to be seen if the Hoosiers are able to push the pace the rest of the year, as last year’s team managed  86 possessions in their opening game win over Northwestern St.

Everyone’s talking about how the freshmen on this squad hit the ground running, and they definitely did, but there aren’t many other options, really. Those freshmen are 6 of the 16 players on the roster. So it’s no surprise that the young ‘uns are contributing.

There are a couple of things that stood out to me from the game, though:

  • It wasn’t just that he hit all but his last shot, but I loved Derek Elston’s game. He seemed to want to hustle for  boards and take what came to him. Plus, for a big man, he’s quick and has a nice stroke.
  • The Hoosiers seem to have real trouble guarding the interior. Both early against Howard and in the exhibition games, it felt like when the opponents got the ball inside, they either got an easy shot (which they often missed in the exhibitions) or went to the line. The 2-1-2 and 2-3 zones seemed to help clog up the lane against Howard, but it bears watching this season. Those zones also helped encourage the cold-shooting Bison to hoist 22 of their 53 field goal attempts from beyond the arc, of which they hit only four (“a number so small you can spell it” as Gasaway might say). I did think that a lot of those 3’s were open. So a team with shooters would obviously fare better. However, saying that it will be tough to defend a team that can score in the paint and shoot the 3 is about as revelatory as telling you that there’s a different strain of the flu out and about this year, so we’ll not belabor that point.
  • Christian Watford grabbed 9 of the 22 shots that the Bison missed while he was on the floor. That’s a pretty sick 41% of all the possible defensive rebounds available to him. If that’s in any way an indicator that he has some defensive rebounding prowess, he could form a potent combination with the offensive rebounding skills of frontcourt mate Tom Pritchard.
  • At first blush, Jordan Hulls didn’t seem to do much on offense. And the numbers bear that out (see efficiency numbers below), but he sure didn’t do much to hurt the team. He only took 2 shots – and hit one of them – but he still found away to collect 5 assists without turning the ball over. According to the efficiency numbers, that comes out to a tidy 178 ORating while using a miniscule 10% of the possessions while he was on the floor. Good stuff. His usage will probably increase and his rating will drop, but there’s some room for both of those to happen.

Here are the efficiency calculations for the Hoosiers (sorted by minutes played):

Indiana ScPoss Poss PtsProd FlrPct ORat Usage

Pritchard, Tom 4.98 5.62 10.85 0.89 192.88 15.20
Hulls, Jordan 2.19 2.84 5.06 0.77 178.46 9.45
Elston, Derek 2.67 3.31 6.60 0.81 199.43 14.39
Dumes, Devan 2.89 8.12 7.15 0.36 88.07 33.85
Capobianco, Bobby 0.29 3.58 0.69 0.08 19.23 23.83

Barnett, Kory 0.00 0.00 0.00 NaN NaN 0.00
Gambles, Steven 0.00 1.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 33.33

So Maurice Creek was the only high usage player (more than 20%) who was particularly efficient. I suspect we’ll see better numbers out of Rivers, Jones, and Dumes, and worse out of the other guys, but I like the roles of the team so far.

All in all, it was a good start. I’m thrilled to have hoops to watch and think about, and I’m even more glad to see the Hoosiers with more than 7 guys to contribute.

Big Ten By the Numbers 2008-2009

Update: We've been slacking on this project for the 2008-2009 season, but we’ve finally gotten things squared away so we can post the data. Here are the numbers, current through 2/9/2009.

We have a little project here at SaWA to be able to look at stats for the Big Ten teams.  For the most part, we use Ken Pomeroy's excellent site as our stats resource, and we neither aspire to nor hope to duplicate (much less exceed) that effort.  However, we thought we might be able to complement it at bit for Big Ten teams. When John Gasaway was knows as the Big Ten Wonk, he advocated that stats for conference games only were the real stuff when it game to useful data, given that most teams overall season numbers are possibly distorted by playing weak competition in the non-conference season. In fact, Gasaway continues to look at those numbers at Basketball Prospectus. We plan on doing some of that, and adding a little more.

First, here are the efficiency numbers for all of the Big Ten teams for conference games only. O Eff is offensive efficiency, or points per possession (PPP) scored. D Eff is defensive efficiency, or PPP allowed. Eff Margin is just O Eff - D Eff. The numbers in parentheses are the conference ranks for that column.

Team Tempo O Eff D Eff Eff Margin
Michigan State 63.7 (3) 1.12 (1) 0.96 (3) 0.16 (1)
Purdue 63.8 (2) 1.03 (5) 0.95 (2) 0.08 (2)
Illinois 61.0 (9) 0.99 (7) 0.94 (1) 0.05 (3)
Ohio State 63.6 (4) 1.06 (3) 1.02 (5) 0.04 (4)
Wisconsin 59.0 (10) 1.08 (2) 1.04 (7) 0.04 (5)
Minnesota 63.1 (5) 0.99 (9) 0.99 (4) 0.00 (6)
Penn State 62.0 (6) 1.04 (4) 1.05 (8) -0.01 (7)
Michigan 61.8 (7) 0.99 (8) 1.03 (6) -0.04 (8)
Northwestern 61.5 (8) 1.02 (6) 1.08 (9) -0.06 (9)
Iowa 58.2 (11) 0.99 (10) 1.08 (10) -0.10 (10)
Indiana 64.6 (1) 0.94 (11) 1.11 (11) -0.17 (11)

That's some good stuff, no? I thought about saving this next piece until the end, because it's without question the coup de grace and all, but it really belongs here. This is another Wonk construct. He used to post a graph showing where teams registered pictorially in terms of O Eff vs. D Eff. And since Lawton loves the charts, here is that very type of graph. (I'm hoping it won't look as crappy as I fear it will, but we'll see, and deal with it later if it does.)

But wait! There's more! Here are the offensive numbers. If you want some explanation, check them out here. The only difference is that these efficiency numbers are per possession rather than per 100 possessions. Conference ranks in parentheses.
